Italian techno duo Nicola Borsato and Luca Flawer aka Flawer & Nick Borsato have been quickly making a name for themselves in the global techno scene thanks to releases on Impact Mechanics, Frequenza, Evolution Recordings and Reloading records. In late 2010, the duo signed with SubSensory for our upcoming 36th release, Jarhead, remixed by label boss JAK and another Venetian duo, Kroman Celik. We caught up with Nicola and Luca to learn a little more about their background, production and interests.

Where are you from, how did you meet, and when did you start working together?

We live in the same town near Venice, so we met as children. We started to make music together in summer 2008, after some years of working separately.

How did you become interested in techno music?

In the first years of 2000, club culture in the North of Italy was characterized by techno and electronic influences, and we frequented clubs oriented to this kind of music. So we became interested in djing and techno music in general.

Who are some of your influences? Are there any new artists who are inspiring you today?

In the beginning we started to follow artists like Mauro Picotto, Richie Hawtin, Marco Bailey, Sven Vath, and during the years after we take inspiration from artists like Chris Liebing, Jeff Mills, Speedy J, Adam Beyer. Nowadays some of these artists are still our references as well as talents like Luke Slater, Alex Bau, Marcel Dettmann, Audio Injection, Tommy Four Seven, Lucy, Monoloc.

Tell us a little about your production process and the technology you are using to create music.

First of all “quiet” because we like to produce with no time pressure, taking also some days of break to listen to projects we are working on. Our goal is to focus on quality rather than quantity.

In our studio we like to find the right balance between analog instruments and effects, and digital audio processing.

Is there a certain vibe that you try to create in your music?

In our music we try to create experimental atmospheres combining them with the pure energy of techno. We like combining dark, acid, deep and futuristic sounds with old school sonorities.

Tell us about your livesets?

During our livesets we use three laptops with Traktor and Ableton, using real time plug-ins, midi interfaces and some external machines, taking inspiration from our studio production process.

We started playing this way quite recently and we’re implementing our setup week by week.

At the moment we have only a few gigs coming up because we’re new in the techno scene and the majority of clubs here book mostly house and commercial music.

Do you have a day job? Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of music?

We spend time in the studio only in the evening, because Flawer works as an Apple and Microsoft specialist in a technical support office and Nick Borsato is finishing his studies in Architecture for Sustainability in Venice.

Our common interests outside music are playing Xbox, watching Wrestling and playing old realtime strategy games :)

What other projects are you working on? What’s next for Flawer & Nick Borsato?

Currently we’re working on some remixes, one of these is for SubSensory’s upcoming release by the artist M.I.T.A, which also features remixes by Audio Injection and Spark Taberner. After we finish these remixes we’ll begin our next EP.

SSR036, Jarhead, is now available on Satellite, TrackItDown, Juno, Beatport and other digital stores. Find more on the duo at
